Mumbai fights for Bijlee, age 58, weight five tonnes

Mumbai: An overworked and overweight Indian elephant called Bijlee is fighting for her life in Mumbai after collapsing in the street, sparking anguish among animal activists and Bollywood stars.

Bijlee, aged 58 and weighing five tonnes, was found lying in pain in a northeastern suburb last week after decades of alleged overwork and neglect.

Local reports said she was used by her owners to beg on the streets and entertain at weddings without a break for more than 50 years.

On Tuesday, elephant specialist K.K. Sharma was flown in to Mumbai to treat Bijlee, and who now has helpers caring for her around the clock and a crane to help her stand up.

"Everybody shows their concerns but unfortunately the prospects are very bad," Sharma told AFP. He said Bijlee is 1.5 tonnes overweight and suffering degenerative joint disease, but even a strict diet many not help much.

Vets say Bijlee's owners have been feeding her junk food for years, such as "vada pav". Indian elephants' usually live off grass and tree bark.

"The damage has been done already. We're trying to control the pain and supplement the vitamin deficiency, give fluid and strengthen her nerves and muscles."

On Tuesday, #savebijlee began trending on Twitter and she appeared on the the front page of Wednesday's Mumbai Mirror.

Bollywood's superstar Amitabh Bachchan is among those moved by her plight, posting pictures and appealing for help on his blog.

"A compassionate appeal to all animal lovers," he wrote on Twitter, asking them to support the "Animals Matter To Me" charity that is caring for Bijlee.

Elephants are a common sight on the streets of many Indian cities although their movements are officially restricted in Mumbai

Gulaab Gang - Actresses Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla (Benaras Mediaworks)

Actresses Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla, who will be seen together in the upcoming film Gulaab Gang, have teamed up for a new campaign to celebrate the triumphs of women against all odds.

Gulaab Gang directed by newcomer Soumik Sen, is based on Gulabi Gang, a group of Indian women vigilantes and activists dressed in pink saris, fighting against the social injustice and operating in the Bundelkhand region of central India.

The film's producer Anubhav Sinha along with the two leading ladies announced the campaign titled Believe, which is an endeavour by Benaras Mediaworks in association with Gulaab Gang.

"It goes without saying that the environment and times we live in are sad and hostile. Especially for us women. And yet there are these stories of rising above the odds which the nation must know of. As a creative artist my job has been to inspire audiences with art and films I'm part of. I look forward to saluting the unknown heroines of the country," Madhuri said.

The campaign will bring forth stories of valour from across the country and talk about unheard stories and unsung heroines.

"It is always inspiring and uplifting to know a real story of real women who have overcome hardships, extreme hardships and come out as winners," Juhi said.

Indian destinations to be shown at Cannes film fest


With the aim of wooing global film directors and producers, several Indian tourist spots will be showcased as "Incredible filming destinations" at Cannes film festival.

The 66th Cannes film festival is celebrating the 100 years of Indian cinema and India is the guest country at the festival.

"The Indian delegation comprising from Information and Broadcasting Ministry and Tourism Ministry officials is participating in the event to showcase the heritage of Indian films and promote India as a "Filming Destination" as cinema has emerged as a powerful tool for the development and promotion of destinations," said a senior Tourism Ministry official.

Oscar award-winning film Life of Pie, directed by Ang Lee, was shot in Pudducherry and Munnar (Kerala). The Tourism Ministry is promoting these destinations as the "Land of Pie".

The Tourism Ministry has signed an MoU with the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to promote Indian cinema as part of Incredible India campaign at various international film festivals like IFFI Goa, European Film Market and Cannes Film Festival.

The Tourism Ministry has set up Incredible India booths at the exibition site of the Cannes film festival.

Pran receives Phalke award


Veteran character actor Pran received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for lifetime service to cinema from information and broadcasting minister Manish Tewari Friday at his home in Union Park, Bandra.

In a respectful gesture, Tewari flew down to Mumbai today to present the award. The 93-year-old actor, whose full name is Pran Kishan Sikand, is ill and had been unable to travel to New Delhi for the National Film Awards function held May 3.


Pran is the 44th recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award that was instituted in 1969, the birth centenary year of Dadasaheb Phalke, the father of Indian cinema. The minister presented the coveted award comprising a Swarn Kamal, citation, shawl and a cash prize of Rs 1 million. Tewari said he was honoured to present the award to Pran Sahab in person in the centenary year of the Indian cinema.


Pran's performance in Half Ticket, Azaad, Madhumati, Devdas, Dil Diya Dard Liya, Ram Aur Shyam, Don and Majboor, among other films, draws eyeballs to this day. Parents had stopped naming their sons Pran owing to his villainous acts. That trend may well be reversed now.

Salman Khan's NGO adopts villages, sends water tankers to drought-hit districts of Maharashtra


Bollywood star Salman Khan's 'Being Human' foundation has come forward to offer help in the drought-hit Marathwada region of Maharashtra.

The foundation is providing 2,500 water tankers with a storage capacity of 2,000 litres each to the drought-affected districts of Marathwada.

"We received an e-mail that Beed district will get 750 water tanks from 'Being Human' foundation. We have informed the Divisional Commissioner for distribution of these tanks," Beed Residential District Collector B M Kamble said.

As per the e-mail, the NGO would supply 750 water tankers to Beed, 500 each to Osmanabad and Jalna, and 250 each to Aurangabad and Nanded.

The NGO has also adopted 200 villages in the Aurangabad district.

People of the Marathwada region have been facing acute water scarcity caused by uneven distribution of rainfall in the state.
