Despite stunted growth, Joby Mathews wins gold at World Arm Wrestling Championship

Navin Nair CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Joby Mathew, a man who did not allowed severe disabilities to come in the way of his ambitions, has won a gold medal at the World Arm Wrestling Championship. Despite having 60 per cent disability since birth, Mathew has also won 10 world medals in the last one decade.
The 36-year-old man, who suffers from Bilateral Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency or in simpler terms stunted growth of the legs since birth, has been a World Arm Wrestling champion twice. What his legs could not, he has achieved with his arms and a bundle of raw courage and grit.
"I don't have legs, so I cannot play football or basketball. Hence I focused on my arm power and started arm wrestling in school days. Soon, I was defeating every one," Mathew said.

In March 2008 at Leon in Spain, Mathew became a World Arm Wrestling champion in the normal category. The same year he also won the championship in the disabled category. Mathew even drives a specially modified car and also hits the gymnasium regularly.
"There is so much to learn for all of us from Joby. It's just his determination that keeps him going," Mathew's trainer Shaji said.
"When Joby Mathew addressed us for the first time, he motivated us with his challenges and achievements. He is an inspiration to us," Krishnan R Menon said.
When Mathew isn't thinking of sports, he dons the role of a husband, and a father to his three-year-old son. And with a supportive wife by his side, he has converted his disability into his biggest strength.
"One ambition which remains is to scale the Mount Everest. I want to achieve that in eight years from now after having undergone proper training," Mathew said.
But as the world champion goes on breaking every possible barrier in sports, there is one thing that he is still waiting for and that is recognition because he too has done his nation proud in whatever way he could.

Saina Nehwal jumps to third spot in badminton rankings

New Delhi: A quarterfinal finish at the Singapore Super Series helped ace India shuttler Saina Nehwal climb a place to the third position at the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) women's singles ranking released today.

The London bronze medallist had dropped to the fourth place after failing to defend her title at the Indonesian Super Series Premier but a last eight finish at Singapore last week enabled her to achieve 73510 points and reach the third spot.

The 23-year-old Indian had been enjoying her career-best ranking of world number two since March this year but her failure to defend her titles in Thailand and Indonesia saw her slip to the fourth place.

Malaysia Open winner P V Sindhu, who missed three back-to-back tournaments in June because of an knee injury, was steady at the 12th position, while rising shuttler Arundhati Pantawane gained 10 places to reach the 49th spot.

Chinese duo of Li Xuerui (87713.42) and Yihan Wang (74655.77) holds the first and second position in the ranking.

In men's singles, a dip in performance reflected in Parupalli Kashyap's ranking as he slipped two places to the 13th spot. The Indian lost in the first round in Indonesia and Singapore.

RMV Gurusaidutt and Ajay Jayaram improved one place each to reach the 22nd and 24th positions in the men's singles ranking. B Sai Praneeth gained five places to reach a career-best ranking of 40, while Thailand Grand Prix Gold champion K Srikanth also jumped a place to the 41st spot. India beat Pakistan by eight wickets, surge to top of table

BIRMINGHAM: This tournament had turned out to be bad for Pakistan, but Messrs Duckworth and Lewis made it worse on Saturday. Their big-ticket clash against India was supposed to be a last chance at redemption but the match was marred by unrelenting bursts of shower and a painfully prolonged end. India, however, still prevailed with ease.

The 50-over match was first cut down to 40 overs a side. That was curtailed further when India began their chase of a revised target of 168 after Pakistan had scored 165 all out in 39.4 overs batting first. Subsequently, another heavy burst of shower further reduced the target to just 39 runs off 63 balls, and India chased it down with 17 balls and eight wickets remaining.

The match, meant to be a dead rubber, was played like a final - the way fans had expected and the occasion was built-up. But in the end, Pakistan's misery only continued while India bagged another win to top the table. They will head to the semifinal in Cardiff riding on greater confidence.

It was a toss any captain would've desperately wanted to win. With clouds constantly hovering over Edgbaston and the possibility of a shower always around, the idea of batting second on a flat wicket, in conditions where sun tends to come out later in the day, always looked a better choice. But Misbah-ul Haq, who'll have many questions to answer when he gets home, lost the toss of the coin to his Indian counterpart MS Dhoni.

It was a shaky start for Pakistan with Bhuvneshwar Kumar seizing the early initiative to have opener Nasir Jamshed caught at second slip. The ball had moved off the pitch, but not so blatantly as to shock the batsmen.

Scoring freely seemed a possibility when Mohammad Hafeez and Kamran Akmal worked on a 46-run stand for the second wicket and the middle-order - consisting of Asad Shafiq, Misbah and Umar Amin - kept adding to their tally.

In fact, such was the strokeplay between these batsmen that from being on the mat as early as in the third over, Pakistan posted a 100 runs in the next 145 balls and from there kept accelerating at almost six runs an over.

Twice, rain marred their innings but not to the extent that conditions changed or the overs got further reduced.

Barring Ravindra Jadeja, once again the pick of India's attack, R Ashwin and an improved Umesh Yadav, India plucked wickets at regular intervals and an amazing set of fielders made the proceedings more difficult for Pakistan.

Dhoni once again made impressive use of the DRS system, serving another reminder to the Indian board of the manner in which it has helped the team here. Meanwhile, only the grass turned greener for Pakistan as rains twice lashed the outfield just when Misbah's men began facing the pressure against an in-form India.

When the chase began, the target - after calculating Pakistan's scoring rate - was set at 168 and openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma appeared to continue from where they'd left off against the West Indies. Scores of Pakistan supporters who had walked in on Saturday morning began filing out early, sensing a lost cause. The aggressive Dhawan pulled and cut with immaculate timing and ease as the Pak attack got blown apart.

He said that the government has already finalized the plan to establish Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Center of Excellence in Sports at Mohali with four regional campuses at Bathinda, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Amritsar at the cost of Rs 100 crore, in which 2000 budding sportspersons would be selected for training.

Praneeth stuns Olympic champion Hidayat

Jakarta: Young Indian shuttler B Sai Praneeth stunned former world and Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia to storm into the pre-quarterfinals of the Indonesian Super Series Premier here today.

The 20-year-old Indian, who made it to the main draw through the qualifiers, came back from one game down as he won the remaining two in stunning fashion to shock the former world number one and 2004 Athens Olympics gold medallist 15-21 21-12 21-17 in a 52-minute gruelling first round contest.

The world number 55 Indian, now runs into world number one and 2012 London Olympics silver medallist Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, in the pre-quarterfinals tomorrow.

Three other Indians -- Ajay Jayaram, RMV Gurusaidutt and Sourabh Verma -- also reached the prequarterfinals but it turned out to be a bad day in office for world number 10 Parupalli Kashyap as he crashed out of the men's singles competition.

The 26-year-old Kashyap was not in his elements and was completely outclassed by former world number six Sho Sasaki of Japan 7-21 8-21 in his campaign opener, which lasted just over half an hour. However, world number 28 Jayaram, Gurusaidutt and Varma notched up victories later in the day to keep India afloat in the men's singles event.

While Jayaram struggled past world number 71 Riyanto Subagja of Indonesia 22-20 8-21 21-12 in a 49-minute hard-fought battle, Gurusaidutt, ranked 25th, got the better off another local player Andre Kurniawan Tedjono 22-20 21-16.

Jayaram will take on fourth seed Sony Dwi Kuncoro, who had won the silver medal at the 2007 World Championship in Kuala Lumpur. Gurusaidutt will meet the winner of the match between seventh seed Dane Jan O Jorgensen and Japan's Kazumasa Sakai.

Varma prevailed over Hans-Kristian Vittinghus of Denmark 19-21 21-14 21-15 in a one-hour-five-minute first round contest. He takes on third seed Chinese Pengyu Du in the pre-quarterfinals.

K Srikanth stuns Boonsak Ponsana to lift Thailand Open Grand Prix

Bangkok:  K Srikanth became the latest badminton sensation to emerge from India as he lifted his maiden men's singles title with a stunning straight-game triumph over top-seeded local favourite Boonsak Ponsana at the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold here on Sunday.

The 20-year-old from Guntur, Andhra Pradesh beat world number eight Ponsana 21-16 21-12 in a 34-minute match to script the biggest win of his still nascent career.

"When I went into the court, I was pretty okay. I was not thinking anything. He was the local guy and the court was also with him. I knew I had a 50-50 chance even though he is world number eight," the excited youngster told PTI.

"I just wanted to give my 100 per cent. I was focusing on one point at a time and I knew it was all about who plays well on that particular day," he said.

The 13th-seeded Indian matched his fancied rival in all departments of the game in what turned out to be a lop-sided contest.

"The win has not sunk in. I am still pretty excited. I spoke to my parents and they are also very happy. I will be travelling to Hyderabad tonight and probably fly back to Singapore next Friday or Saturday," he said.

The first game went neck and neck before Srikanth broke free to notch up six consecutive points to win the game and wrest the initiative.

"The first game was tough. I was leading by 2-3 points from the start but in the end he was like 15-16 but he made some unforced errors as I played some attacking badminton. It worked as I got four points on the trot and that made all the difference," he said.

The second game was a completely one-sided affair with Srikanth scoring at ease. The Indian sent down nine smashes against his rival's three to stamp his authority in the match.

Ponsana had a two-point lead to start with but Srikanth made amends quite quickly to reel off eight successive points and seal the game and the match in his favour.

"In the second game I played pretty well, I was leading 11-5 and continued in the same vein. I didn't relax and stayed focussed. I could see that although the crowd was supporting him, he looked tense and turned on the pressure on him," he said.

Srikanth had previously reached the quarter-finals of the Asian Junior Championships and entered the prequarterfinals of the World Junior Championships in 2011.

Indian male shuttlers have been making quite a mark internationally of late. P Kashyap had won the Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold last year.

Shikhar Dhawan inspirational in India's opening win over South Africa

If this is a taste of things to come then fasten the seat belts and enjoy the ride. The first match of the Champions Trophy was a fine spectacle, contested under a cloudless Welsh sky and above a wonderfully true strip of Welsh soil. In the end it was won comfortably by India by 26 runs, although there were moments when AB de Villiers and Robin Peterson were together in pursuit of an unlikely 332 for victory when MS Dhoni, the coolest of cats, may have worn a little frown.

A capacity crowd was enthralled by a blaze of magnificent strokeplay and – for a while, at least – an unpredictable outcome and, if that wasn't enough, there was always the hamster in a bubble race at the interval. The only group to leave the stadium disgruntled were the seam bowlers of each side, who had all endured a gruelling day.

This pitch was fast-bowler hostile, not quite what England have been craving for in this tournament. The most miserable of the lot was Morne Morkel, who had been laid low with a thigh strain after bowling 6.5 overs.

With Dale Steyn not risked for this match, the South African bowling attack suddenly looks as if has been critically neutered.

Any relief that international bowlers may have experienced when they realised that Virender Sehwag was out of form and favour and no longer a part of the Indian team must now be tempered by the fact that they have to bowl at Shikhar Dhawan. This Delhi-based left-hander has had to wait a while – he is 27 – but he has already delivered two superb centuries in different forms of the game. His 187 in his solitary Test innings, which was against Australia in Mohali, was the fastest century by a Test debutant.

Here he hit his maiden ODI century, 114 from 94 balls. Actually it would be more accurate to say that he caressed the ball around Cardiff with silky strokeplay that barely contained a hint of violence. Early on we were alerted to a special talent when he advanced down the pitch to Lonwabo Tsotsobe as if he was a left-arm spinner and the ball disappeared through extra cover at an alarming lick. Later he would pop a delivery from Tsotsobe back over the bowler's head deep into the stands. Then he leant back gracefully to glide a bouncer over the keeper from the face of his bat.

There is a swagger about Dhawan; his hairstyle changes with the seasons; his earring glitters in the sunshine. When he was hit on the head he tried to give the impression that this was no more troublesome to him than an irritating fly. He was the man of the match.

Dhawan had excellent support from Rohit Sharma, a converted opening batsman, who scored 65 from 81 balls. Only Morkel seriously inconvenienced them and for a while De Villiers, a harassed captain behind the stumps, looked as if he would settle for a target of around 350.

He could thank a handy spell of off-breaks from JP Duminy, plus some gritty bowling from Ryan McLaren, for preventing India from rewriting the record books. Despite a chirpy 47 from Ravindra Jadeja India were "restricted" to 331. A few of their batsmen had forgotten that the square boundaries at Cardiff are not of IPL dimensions and they holed out to a distant square leg.

Three hundred and thirty-one sounds like an awfully big score but there is now the possibility for rampant inflation in ODI cricket this summer if the sun continues to shine and the groundsmen produce pitches like this. Add into the mix the new fielding regulations and it is hard to be sure that any side batting first is ever safe.

In fact, South Africa could have overhauled this target. They were 155 for two in the 25th over whereupon the first of two wanton run-outs dented their chances. Peterson, promoted to No3, had batted with remarkable fluency alongside an equally polished De Villiers, who had hit some stupendous strokes through the off-side. Then they met mid-pitch with the ball in the hands of Jadeja at midwicket. So Peterson had to go.

Unusually India's excellent fielding had brought them back in the game along with a more familiar strength, the quality of their spin bowling. Ravi Ashwin's off-breaks helped to stem the tide and so did the wily Jadeja with his flightless left-arm spinners.

Soon De Villiers spliced an attempted pull-shot and David Miller was run-out without facing. Yet still South Africa topped 300 with McLaren after the busiest of days hitting a valiant, though vain 71. It would have helped him if the injured Morkel, no longer permitted a runner, could have done more than hobble only the longest of singles.

Here was much to ponder for sides seeking to work out their strategy for this tournament. There was one obvious conclusion for the England side if these conditions are replicated in Cardiff when they meet New Zealand here on 16 June: the four-pronged pace attack plan will have to be shelved. They will have to play the left-arm spinner. Whoops! They haven't got one.

David Beckham to might comeback in football with Indian Super League

David Beckham has been approached about making a sensational soccer comeback in India, which could see him pocket £1 million.

David Beckham is in talks about making an instant return to playing soccer - in India.

The 38-year-old star - who announced his retirement from the sport last month - has been approached about joining a new franchise-based league of eight teams, which would run from January 14 to March 13, and experts believe he could earn £1 million for two months' work.

A source told The Sun newspaper, "Basically Becks can charge whatever he wants. What he would do for the league in terms of international interest and publicity is priceless."

The former England captain has been approached about playing in the Indian Super League - a soccer version of the IPL cricket league - alongside his former England teammate Michael Owen and Spanish star Raul.

Since hanging up his boots last month following the end of the season with French champions Paris Saint Germain, David has been linked to a number of new careers, with movie mogul Harvey Weinstein tipping the soccer star to be a hit in Hollywood.

He said, "David can be anything he wants, including becoming a movie star. He doesn't need any advice from me, he can do anything he wants."

"I've known about David for many, many years, way before he even joined the [Los Angeles Galaxy soccer team].

"I have only met David a few times but each time I find his talents more and more impressive. I am a real fan. I think he could do anything he wants in TV and film."

David has also admitted he is keen to invest in a US soccer club and earlier this month, Brad Pitt said he would love the newly-retired hunk to give his children - Maddox, 11, Pax, nine, Zahara, eight, Shiloh, six, and four-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne - personal soccer lessons.

He told BANG Showbiz: "I want him to teach my kids soccer."

Honda-driven Japan first team to qualify for 2014 World Cup

An injury-time penalty from Keisuke Honda fired Japan into the 2014 FIFA World Cup, making the Samurai Blue the first country to qualify for next year's tournament in Brazil.
With Japan needing to avoid defeat in order to clinch one of the 32 places with a game to spare, playmaker Honda converted a late spot-kick to level the score at 1-1 after Australia had taken a surprise lead through Tommy Oar's speculative cross with eight minutes remaining.
Tuesday's point means Alberto Zaccheroni's Japan are seven points clear at the top of Asian qualifying's Group B and assured of a place in a fifth consecutive World Cup.
The top two teams from each of Asia's five-country groups advance, with both third-placed teams entering a playoff.
José Mourinho's press conference antics Mourinho returns to Chelsea
Blog: Can Chelsea go "Back to the Future?"
The winner of that two-legged tie plays the fifth-placed team from the South American section to decide who goes to the tournament. Brazil, as host nation, has does not need to qualify.
Oman also enjoyed a fruitful Tuesday as they leaped from second bottom in Group B to second top after beating Iraq 1-0 in Muscat thanks to Ismail Al Ajmi's goal in first half stoppage time.
The Omanis' nine points are now two better than both Australia and Jordan, but the latter pair have a match in hand.
This will be played when the Socceroos, who have qualified for the last two World Cups, host Jordan in Melbourne next Tuesday.

The result of that match will determine what each team needs to do in their final qualifier on June 18, when Group B concludes with Australia at home again, against Iraq, while Oman travel to Jordan.

Japan's next commitment is the forthcoming Confederations Cup in Brazil, a warmup event for 2014's four-yearly showpiece.

Zaccheroni's Asian champions play hosts Brazil in the competition's opening game on June 15.

Elsewhere in Asia, former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has been named head coach of Chinese Super League club Guangzhou R & F.
The Swede, who has also coached Manchester City, Lazio, Roma and Ivory Coast during a 36-year managerial career, has left his post as technical director of United Arab Emirates club Al Nasr.
"The club's board of directors has today officially hired Sven-Goran Eriksson as Guangzhou football coach until December 2014," read a statement from the club, which is 13th in the 16-team CSL.
"Coach Li Bing will from today no longer serve as the acting head coach."

Narain Karthikeyan claims maiden Auto GP victory

Silverstone, (UK): India`s top driver Narain Karthikeyan recorded his maiden Auto GP victory after leader Kevin Giovesi was given a one-minute post race penalty at the Silverstone Circuit here.

Ghinzai Motosport’s Giovesi was penalised for pitting on lap 14, the last lap of race one Saturday at round four of the series. The Auto GP regulations allow the drivers to take their mandatory pitstops only between lap three and penultimate lap.

Therefore, Karthikeyan was elevated to the top of the podium. It was an ideal start for the former Formula 1 driver with his new team, Super Nova, who were champions in the 2012 Auto GP season.

“Finally a win has come my way. The car felt great during qualifying and practice and we carried the pace into the race. I was leading the pack for most of the race until Giovesi got ahead towards the end. But he made an error by pitting on the final lap,” Karthikeyan said.

The Indian will start race two Sunday in eighth place on the reverse grid. The win has pushed Karthikeyan to fourth in the standings with 59 points.

Friday, Karthikeyan claimed pole position clocking 1:46.286 ahead of newcomer Giovesi and Super Nova teammate Vittorio Ghirelli in the qualifying.

Karthikeyan drove for Zele Racing in the first three rounds of 2013 before securing a last minute deal at Super Nova.

The 36-year-old scored 34 points in the opening six races while driving for Zele with luck getting the better of him on occasions where he could have pushed for a podium.

Asked why he left Zele, Karthikeyan said: “I was not happy with the reliability of the car. There were times I was in the reckoning for top three but something or the other went wrong.”

A botched pit stop cost the Indian a podium in the last round at Hungaroring.

Washington: In a move that once again raised the hopes of wrestlers all over the world, the sport of wrestling won a reprieve and made the International Olympic Committee (IOC) list for the 2020 Olympics, three months after being dropped from the list.

Along with wrestling, squash and a combined baseball-softball bid also made the cut from a lineup of eight sports vying for a single opening.

The five sports - karate, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and the Chinese martial art of wushu, were eliminated from the contention.

Stating that the list is a good mix of team and individual sports, IOC vice president Thomas Bach said that the IOC executive board will submit wrestling, squash and baseball-softball to the full IOC assembly for a final decision on Sept. 8.

The board voted by secret ballot over several rounds, with wrestling winning on the first round with eight of the 14 votes, baseball-softball beating karate 9-5 in a head-to-vote while squash got through in the final round, getting eight votes to defeat wushu.

The move brought smiles back to the faces of athletes who had thought that their chances to compete in the Olympics were lost forever, even as co-president of the World Baseball Softball Confederation Riccardo Fraccari expressed his gratitude and said that the decision has motivated them to work even harder on behalf of the athletes.

Meanwhile, actor and former college wrestler William Baldwin said that only the sport of wrestling can bring Russia, the US and Iran together quickly, on the same page, united in one voice with the same goal.

Men`s baseball and women`s softball, which have been off the program since the 2008 Beijing Games, merged into a single federation to improve their chances of getting back in, while squash is bidding for an Olympic spot for a third time.

Wrestling was surprisingly cut from the list of core sports by the IOC board in February, causing an international outcry and prompting the United States, Russia, Iran and other countries to join forces in a bid to bring the sport back .

Nanao, Dilbag win silver in Russia

Khabarovsk, Russia: The Indian campaign came to an end at the Khabarovsk International Competition in Khabarovsk, Russia with two silver medals and three bronze medals.

The two Indian boxers in the finals, National Games gold medallist Th Nanao Singh (49kg) and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Dilbagh Singh (69kg) had to be content with a silver medal finish after they lost to their respective opponents in the title round.

In the finals of the light fly weight division Nanao Singh went up against local lad Sagaluev Bator. Sagaluev had a similar technique to Nanao and both the boxers were equally matched, but the Russian seemed to have an edge with his precise attacks.

The 22 year old Indian tried hard to reduce the margin, but Sagaluev kept nicking crucial points to maintain the advantage. In the end Nanao lost on points 8-12. Multiple national champion Dilbagh Singh had a bad day at office and seemed out of sorts against Kozhabekov Bakytzhan of Kazakhstan. He lost on points 3-9.

Earlier Sunil Kumar (52kg), Shiva Thapa (56kg) and Satish Kumar (+91kg) reached the semi-final stage of the tournament to bag the bronze medal in their respective weight categories.

World Squash Federation Welcomes International Olympic Committee Sport Shortlist Decision for 2020 Games

St Petersburg, Russia: The World Squash Federation today welcomed the decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board to shortlist Squash as a potential sport to join the Olympic Programme for the 2020 Olympic Games. The IOC Executive Board, which comprises 15 IOC members including President Jacques Rogge, made its decision after receiving presentations from eight sports.

The Squash presentation team included seven-time women's world champion and world number one Nicol David, and Ramy Ashour, men's world champion and world number one. Three films - which can be viewed at www.worldsquash.org/ws/?page_id=11686 - were shown in the Squash presentation, including a newly-commissioned film which captures the broadcast innovations the sport has introduced in the last few years.

World Squash Federation President N Ramachandran, who led Squash's presentation team, said: "This is a huge milestone in our quest to join the Olympic Programme and I would like to thank the Executive Board for the faith it has placed in Squash. It was fantastic to have the women's and men's world number ones on our presentation team, and Nicol and Ramy were passionate about what it would mean to them to have the chance to compete in the Olympic Games. It was also important that our presentation communicated the scale and breadth of innovations that Squash has introduced over the last few years, in particular in key areas such as broadcasting, and I believe we did that.
Malaysia's Nicol David, seven-time World Champion, said: "This is a great day for Squash as it takes us one step closer to realising our long held ambition to join the Olympic Games. I said to the Executive Board that the one big regret in my career is that I have never had the chance to compete in the Olympic Games, but I would happily trade all my seven world titles for the chance of Olympic Gold. Hopefully that showed what competing in the Games means to me. It was a true honour to play a part in our presentation and I will do everything I can as we head towards Buenos Aires to help our campaign."

Egypt's Ramy Ashour, Men's World Number one, added: "It was great for Nicol and me to be part of the
presentation team and to represent the Men's and Women's professional Squash Tours. I think this was an important message to the IOC Executive Board as it shows what competing in the Games would mean to us and every single player on the tours. Being part of our presentation has fuelled even more my dream to compete in the Olympic Games, and I really do pray that this journey leads me to the Olympic Games in 2020, where I can make my country proud and win Gold for Egypt."

President Ramachandran concluded: "Squash would grow all over the world with the Olympic Movement. We are a growing, global sport played in 185 countries by millions across the world. We offer the genuine prospect of new nations on the medal podium. We would be easy and low cost to integrate into the Olympic Games with just 64 athletes, two competition courts that can be built in days and we have a great track record of being hosted in iconic locations. I think all these elements were important considerations for the IOC Executive Board. It is critical now that we build further momentum and support ahead of the IOC member vote in Buenos Aires on September 8, and this is what the global Squash family is completely focussed on."

Premlata Agrawal becomes the first Indian woman mountaineer to complete the Seven Summits

New Delhi: The height of her spirit for adventure reached a crescendo as ace woman mountaineer, Premlata Agrawal marked her imprint atop Alaska’s McKinley Peak and planted the Indian Tricolor as completion to scaling the SEVEN CONTINENTAL PEAKS on May 23, 2013. With this, she became the first Indian woman mountaineer to step on the highest peak of North America. She was felicitated for this momentous achievement on her return to India, here in the capital today.

On each of the seven continents, there is one peak that stands above the rest. The Seven Summits present different challenges that have to be overcome with extreme and testing fortitude. Summiting all of them is regarded as one of the world’s biggest mountaineeringchallenge. Seven Summits has become the dream of many climbers, but only a select few have succeeded. Premlata now proudly belongs to this group.

Speaking on her triumphant return, Premlata Agrawal said, “I am extremely proud to have accomplished this achievement on behalf of my country and all the women who live here with courage and determination. This experience has again taught me that if you have the will and focus, no matter where you come from, you can conquer the world.”

Also present on the occasion and the key facilitator for her homecoming was Member of Parliament, Dr. Ajay Kumar from Jamshedpur (Jharkhand); belonging to Premlata’s family’s hometown. Dr. Kumar said, “Premlata has been a reason for us at Jharkhand to be proud since a long time. She is now a national source of inspiration to all and I’d like to offer her our deepest respect and congratulations.”

The unassuming housewife who ventured out of the kitchen to give shape to all mountaineers’ greatest dream, worked towards her passion for heights starting at the age of 35 when she undertook the Dalma (hill) trek 13 years ago. That was the starting point that led to the now famous Thar Camel Expedition, the ascent of Mt Kilimanjaro before setting foot on the world’s highest peak, Mt Everest, on 20th May, 2011. This feat provided her the vision to want to plant the Tri Color on all the Continental Peaks – The Seven Summits.

Ace mountaineer and the first Indian woman to scale Mt Everest, Tata Steel and Ms Bachendri Pal have played a key role in discovering and encouraging Premlata’s talent to be able to achieve success via rigorous training and mental coaching.

Just before Premlata embarked on the ascent of McKinley Peak to cap off her Seven Continental Peaks’ successful climbs, the Government of India awarded her The Padmashree Honor for her trail-blazing achievements.

To quote Premlata further, “Even when foul weather thwarted my initial attempt of planting my National Flag atop Mt Denali, my determination to climb this peak did not fizzle out; instead, it re-bolstered my will to start anew and ascend Denali. What egged me on in overcoming the toughest of obstacles during my ascents was the fire covering my spirit to achieve in the form of our Tricolour wrapped around me, which, I have planted atop each of the seven Continental Peaks with the pride of being an Indian woman.”

“My most cherished desire is to draw forth Indian women out of their routine household chores and imbibe in them the exciting and indefatigable spirit of adventure that will instill in them the confidence to tackle all situations.”

Mumbai girl Ananya wins bronze in World School Chess

Mumbai: Nine-year-old Mumbai girl Ananya Gupta has claimed a bronze medal in the World School Chess championship held at Haldikki in Greece.

Ananya, a product of South Mumbai Chess Academy (SMCA), was ranked 7th with an ELO of 1564 in the tournament held between May 6-15.

She created waves by beating the much higher ranked Yvonne Beline of France on way to finishing third in the competition.

Her vigorous attitude was evident in this particular game, wherein, despite a "dead draw" situation she refused to settle for it, tricked her opponent and claimed the victory.

Ananya, who had clinched gold at the 9th Singapore Chess Festival earlier, won seven out of nine games to bag the bronze, Maharashtra Chess Association's joint secretary Nagesh Guttula said.

"I felt very calm and relaxed in Greece and I played my usual game", said Ananya about her performance.

She had trained for seven hours daily before the tournament with her coaches at SMCA and is now preparing for the Under 9 nationals.
