GSHSEB results: 92.53% pass HSC science exam

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) declared on Monday a bumper 92.53 per cent HSC (science) result-the highest ever in its four decade long history. In 2012, the board had declared 67.70 per cent result.

Ironically, while the number of students who passed the exam jumped significantly, there was a drastic drop in the meritorious students. In 2012, 302 students had scored A1 grade- these students had scored over 90 per cent marks. This year, only 162 students scored A1 grade.

Education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama attributed the jackpot result to the semester system which was introduced for the first time in 2011 from class XI (science). The final HSC (science) result declared is the aggregate of the marks scored by the students in four semesters, two of which were subjective and two were objective in nature.

"The semester system which required the students to score an average 132 marks out of 400 marks of the four semesters worked to the advantage of the students. The number of students who have cleared the exams is significantly higher this time", said Chudasama who declared the results.

He said that of the 14 lakh students who had appeared for the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE), 96,000 students were from the state board. "From Gujarat, 10,787 students have qualified to appear for the prestigious JEE advance exams", the minister said.

Vice chairman of the board HK Patel said that the state board's policy to have 132 aggregate marks out of 400 in all the four semesters helped at least 29,000 more students pass the exams.

In fact, the bumper result led to a drastic rise in the number of schools which posted 100 per cent result. This year, the number of schools with cent per cent result jumped from 28 in 2012 to 297. Similarly, a sharp decline was recorded in schools with less than 10 per cent result which dropped from 42 in 2012 to just 2 this year.

It needs mention that the result of first semester was 89 per cent while the second semester result was 61.50 per cent wherein 46,000 students had failed to clear the exam. "This prompted the GSHSEB to mull over the yardstick that should be used to declare the final result. If ATKT was declared for each semester, board would be caught in the vicious cycle of taking re-tests. Hence it was decided that the pass marks would be kept at an aggregate 132 marks scored in all the semesters", Patel said.

The 8515 students who have not scored the mandatory 132 marks in all the subjects were marked as 'need improvement'.
