Pushing ahead with its plan to make Outer Ring Road free of traffic signals, the Delhi government on Sunday laid the foundation stone for construction of an elevated road between Mangolpuri and Madhuban Chowk.
The 2.6-km road is part of the seven elevated stretches that have been planned on Outer Ring Road between Vikaspuri (West Delhi) and Wazirabad (North Delhi).
Scheduled to be complete by April 2015, the Mangolpuri-Madhuban Chowk elevated road will allow the commuters to steer clear of traffic signals at Som Vihar chowk, Pitampura police line chowk, Rohini T-junction, Deepali chowk and Saraswati Vihar T-junction.
Speaking after the ceremony, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said: "The new infrastructure would provide facilities like signal-free movement of traffic from Mangolpuri to Madhuban Chowk. A new FOB for pedestrians near Saraswati Vihar would also be constructed, besides bus lanes, green belt, footpath, cycle tracks and rainwater harvesting.''
While the entire project is pegged to cost Rs 2,200 crore, this stretch will require Rs 423 crore, an official said.
Earlier, the work on the first part of the project — an elevated road between Vikaspuri and Meera Bagh — had formally started in February 26 after the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone.
Officials said the plan is to further integrate this signal-free section (Vikaspuri to Wazirabad) with the Signature Bridge.
Elevated portions will come up between Meera Bagh and Deepali Chowk; Badli and Mukarba Chowk and four flyovers will be made between Mukarba Chowk and Wazirabad.
The road will also be extended to Noida.
"The elevated roads from Madhuban Chowk to Mukarba Chowk and Mukarba Chowk to Wazirabad will also be inaugurated soon,'' a government official said.
With the Assembly elections slated for later this year, the Congress-led government has been on an inauguration spree laying emphasis on infrastructure projects.
